Warm Beer, Lousy Food

Though reportedly pub-goers have been developing more sophisticated palates as of late, traditional English fare is legendarily bad. Famously, the Brits harbor a bitter grudge against good, frosty beer and food containing less than its weight in lard. Stateside pubs however tend to serve up pub grub with an American twist. Meaning pub food here is generally viewed as a delicacy, as opposed to merely a necessity.

Not so at Brit’s, a truly authentic pub located just across the street from my house in Pasadena. The beer at Brit’s is warm, though cheap. They don’t serve Guinness, though they will recommend Beamish, which “tastes similar.” (It doesn’t.) The chips are greasy to the point of intimidation, the curry might well be more honestly advertised as “curry flavored butter,” and they only recently installed taps. In short, if you are looking for a “real” pub, Brit’s is the place for you.

Tonight (Monday) is “Britpop” night at Brit’s. I have never attended Britpop night, but the other night a friendly employee encouraged me to attend, promising the likes of, and I quote, “Sabbath, Radiohead, Zeppelin, South, and Blur.” Though not all of the aforementioned musical groups qualify as “Britpop” necessarily, they were/are all British, and their music was at one point/still is popular. Close enough.

My good friend Peter Owen and I will be relaxing at Brit’s tonight after we see Sin City at 7:20. Anyone who would like to join us for either leg of the evening’s festivities (movie or drinks) is certainly welcome to attend. Email me or call for further details…

For those not of the emailing/calling disposition, Brit’s is located on Colorado Boulevard between Allen Avenue and Meredith Drive. Take the 605 N, 210 W, exit Allen, take a left, then right on Colorado.

Cheers!
