a little bit of canada

In following with the life updates being put up on the blog... i will add my own.

It's been four weeks now in Calgary, and the supplies are running low. Our last shipment was ambushed coming over the pass from northern montana. Tightening our belts, we wait in cold silence pondering who to eat first.

Actually, Calgary is great. The first few weeks up here we weren't shooting, so I had the weekends off to explore. I went up to Banff one day, rented a bicycle another day... made some friends with the owners of a great bar and go there and drink for free. We started filming last week. The majority of the scenes we are shooting are night scenes, and night doesn't start here until 10:30 or so and the sun starts to come out around 4, so we have very little darkness and have been shooting late each night. So my schedule consists of going to sleep around 5-6 am and waking up around noon or 1 pm. It's actually kind of nice.

The crew is great and the actors are doing a good job.

My current listening includes the following:
Mat Kearney
Guster
Band of Horses
The Walkmen
Rogue Wave
new Snow Patrol
Wolf Parade

My wife is coming out this Thursday for a few days to visit, so that will be a nice time as we have three days off for holiday stuff. Luckily, Canada Day and July 4th fall around the same time.

I sit here now drinking some coffee in my oversized hotel suite about to head down for my car to go to set as we have a 7 pm call time tonight. but it should be a light night and we'll be out of there by 3 am.

July 7 thru 17th out here is something called Stampede. It is basically a huge rodeo/ fair and the whole town is just nuts I hear. Over 1 million people come thru Calgary during that time. We plan on seeing and doing as much as we can on our day off while it is going on. This town is a rich oil town surrounded by ranches, but it is a beautiful town with good people.

So all in all, it has been a good expereince so far. Been meeting lots of people and learning a good deal.

And that is all for now.

little pad in hawaii

good to hear from you mr. o'brien. mr. lewis. mr. o'b, your presence would be much appreciated in los silver lake. you are quite missed. anyhow...

listening: don ho, my vintage hawaiian collection, roy smeck, tiny bubbles, smiley smile, vintage violence

reading: (books brought to hawaii) the beautiful and damned, adventures of augie march, confederacy of dunces

the dodgers finally won two in a row. since i refer to my relationship with the team as "we" i suppose their play as of late is important. i've got a large cyst on my face. it's pretty gross.

my days consist of this. wake up at 6:00. download podcasts, make fried egg sandwich, drink milk, shower. commute to whittier. work/ write short stories, lyrics, movies longhand. commute home. tcb on bills and whatnot. transcribe writing from the day to the computer or guitar or piano. run. watch csi sometimes while sweaty. shower. make dinner. sometimes write music, have drinks, see friends. watch half a movie or arrested development. fall asleep. do it again.

now, though. i be in hawaii. tomorrow is one year of life with the lovely robyn l. this is totally a secret, but i've gotten her a bag of nachos and meteorites. she's gonna love it.

in hawaii i will swim, go to the doctor for my cyst, eat fruits, sun bathe, read, write (as a side note, poppo is writing his memoir called 'the soul of the hillbilly.' he just went upstairs to get his walter brennen comedy cd. walter brennen is rio bravo's stumpy for those of you not in the know.), run, surf, look at fish, eat fish, and play my uku, and drink koffee.

when i get home, i will go to montana. books to montana: blood meridian, my antionia, i don't know what else.

then i'll come home, watch the band take off (walter brennen is fantastic), and look at my cystless face with pride. maybe i'll be a teacher. maybe i'll start the great american novel.

for brent

alright brent, you're right. we need to contribute more, all sixteen dozen of us. here's a little update from me.

LISTENING:
Band of Horses
'everything all the time'

band of horses

READING:
Robert Elms
'The Way We Wore'

the way we wore

DOING:
right now i am sitting at the bayou. it is 2:45am. WTF am i doing you ask. i answer:

my inlaws are in town tonight. they are taking my wife away from me for a week tomorrow when she is done with her school year. after she gets done with work she has an interview with warner brothers to meet with their recruiters about a full time position within the huge Time Warner megalopolis. Hopefully she'll end up getting something with New LIne or maybe PIcture House or something.

anyway, amanda's parents are staying with us tonight, in our 445sq ft. cottage. they can't deal with the cats, so the cats, plus litter box, water dish, food dish etc get to stay in our room. there was so much fucking noise, cats, amanda's dad walking around wearing what CWK calls heavy boots, amanda snoring.... i had to make a fucking break for it. i couldn't sleep, and i have to work at 4:15am anyway, so i figured i would come over to the bayou, smoke some cigarettes, drink some ginger ale, and catch up on some me time. please shoot me for typing 'me time'.

some stuff going on, nothing too crazy, but some hopefully good opportunities on the horizon. amanda has that interview and i have one on monday too. it is for a personal assistant position to a surgeon/business mogul/reeal estate dude. $25/hour full time. hopefully this will work out. it could be sweet. i need a job other than starbucks soooo bad. so if this works out and amanda finds a job too, we'll probably be packing up and heading out of whittier. say goodbye to the renaissance friends. we'll probably try and find a place near/in silver lake/echo park/highland park/hipsterwood/whatever. we dont wanna be driving all that way anymore. we wanna drive less.

that's about it for me dudes.
im free all weekend.
give me a call

Don't go running after dinner

I almost threw up.

In other news, good to hear the updates Capt. Lewis... keep it up.
I don't really like my job anymore, actually more like the idea of work at all.
Dana and I own a poodle. Her name is Stella. She is a black woman.
I get to go to Japan for a week in August- Tokyo and another city which I can't recall.
We also get to go on Japanese radio for a live in-studio performance. Very exciting. Very relaxing. Suntory. Suntory. Suntory.

That's all for now

i'm probably

drunk and i'm at work and just glanced at the blog, as you do, this place is boring, c'mon people, i'm bored. i try writing a little bit, but it's boring, there's like sixteen dozen contributors to this blog and there's nothing happening. isn't there anything going on out there at all? we'd like to know about it

there's a local brewery here that does a very nice saison i'm enjoying...very nice.

sincerely,
brent

Update

I joined a new band. You should totaly check out our Myspace Page.

Regarding Interleague Play

I have pondered the results and wondered: For those who consider yourselves fans of the so-called "National" league, how does it feel to root for a second-rate, amateur team? Only the Cardinals (3-2), Brewers (5-4), and Rockies (5-1) have winning records against the magnificient ballclubs of the American League. It is a pity to see you subjected to such a poor brand of ballplaying.

I offer a solution. Choose one of Our lesser teams. Perhaps Devil Rays of Tampa Bay(7-1 interleague record), The Mariners of Seattle (8-0) or the Royals of Kansas City(4-4). They lack fans due to their poor American League performance but would surely be champions of your second circuit.

If that does not suit you, consider cheering on an American League Triple-A team. I offer the Toledo Mudhens, the top farm club of the mighty Tigers of Detroit. You will see superior talent displayed (as opposed to your own National League hacks).

If you are truly desperate, you could take in a local cricket match or two depending on the haplessness of your team.

Whatever the solution, I wish you well in finding a more honest representation of the national game.

hi!

i'm having some coffee this morning, getting ready to head off to work. i just thought i'd write a little note on the ole' porch.

well, a lot going on at work i'm afraid. things are moving right along. yesterday after work i came home, pumped up the a/c, drank some korean rice wine and a quart of beer and cleaned up the apt. looking pretty good i'd say. then i played a little number on the piano and watched a bit of arrested development, enjoying some baklava and ginger ale all the while.

i'm bored. i want to go bowling this weekend. i'm going to take jacqueline bowling this weekend i think. jacqueline is lovely, in switzerland, but coming straight to philadelphia upon landing friday (can you hear the champagne pop?). jacqueline is a (lovely) girl who lives in ny with whom i've spent three of the last four weekends with and am planning on the next two. so they opened a lucky strike in phila and now it seems like such a cool place. i haven't been, but there's no bowling in center city and i'm quite looking forward to it. i'll report back on the effect of extreme trendiness on an otherwise good idea, as well as my varying ability to enjoy such pursuits.

my sister is about to have her second baby any day...very exciting

so today i'm going off to work soon. i think i'll listen to g.barkley and maybe my morning jacket on the way in (both very good walking musics). still no a/c at work, so fans and windows and then i just sweat a lot as it's 90's and humid. yes, my life is uber-luxurious.

ok-b
