Alan

I first met Alan at LAX. He was one of those lucky Biola Bounders. (I know I have had contact with some of you during those times.) Nice guy from the start but sort of put him on the backburner during the trip back mainly because I am a guy and there was this hot little snowboarding chick I had also picked up at the airport from Truckee. She didn't end up coming to Biola....I wonder why...perhaps it was my constant comparison to her and Lisa Loeb..anyway I digress. Alan ended up coming to Biola. I was friends with Alan but we were at sort of different ends of the Biola spectrum. I was on my way out and he was just getting pulled into the glass menagerie; Was it glass?... only Mr. Williams could tell for sure. I have to say that spending time with Alan, Jesse, Keith, Brent and all others that ran in their circles during the rest of my time at Biola was a great experience. I got to pretend every once in awhile that I was a comm. major and not a history major. Jesse casting me as a jock who breaks down, befriends an abusive Afro-American sock puppet, goes on a cocaine binge and then is finally redeemed by a talking portrait of Willie Nelson. Or having Brent and Alan star in my still yet to be finished, named or found opus. Alan casting me as a "happy" film critic who loves the work of one vocally challenged film director. And after all these years...alot of you have welcomed me back onto this porch, and Alan with everything he is doing is again helping me or perhaps more like carrying me along; open to try one of my ideas for a screenplay. I write all of this partially because of nostalgia but mainly because I wanted to tell Alan thanks, congrats, and I wish I could be there for the collective bachelor party. Good luck in married life, it is grand. No fantasies anymore about the chick you just met and her lingerie, you got your woman with the cotton underwear.(paraphrased quote from High Fidelity, which directly led to my courtship and marriage to my wife, Chrystel) Truckee and all of its hot snowboarding chicks be damned and may your life with your wife Alan, be amazingly blessed.

Here's where you're going this weekend...

Alright, for those of you coming to spend the night, here's where we're staying. The Address is 108 Van Nuys Blvd. Take the 101 North until you get to Oxnard. Exit the Victoria/Channel Islands exit and go west/south on Victoria. Take Victoria about 7 miles or so until it becomes Roosevelt Blvd. Take Roosevelt until it becomes Island View. Make a right on Van Nuys Blvd. It's on the left. Park on the street where you can find it. There's also the option of parking elsewhere and carpooling in. Preferably the less cars on the street, the better. We're going to meet at the house at 8:00 p.m. Friday night. BE SURE TO BRING SOMETHING TO SLEEP IN! (i.e. sleeping bag, blankets, large condoms) It'll take you about an hour to get there from LA w/o traffic. Plan accordingly.
Please bring enough alcohol for yourself and a couple of friends. We will meet at the house and run to the grocery store for some breakfast items. As for the dinner/bar-b-que, bring some meat, we'll shop for the rest. If there is anyone that did not get called or invited, please call them if you can think of them. Thanks a lot. See you Friday night.

-Jayson

p.s. Everyone is more than welcome to come up for the day Saturday.

My birthday.

So, Thursday is my birthday. Jen will be taking me to Popeye's for a crawfish dinner, after which we are planning on hitting up All Star Lanes for beer and karaoke. Anyone who would like is not only invited, but strongly encouraged, perhaps even threatened to attend the All Star portion of the evening.

Don't worry, if All Star turns out to be a bust, there's always the Little Cave.

If you can't make it, we're going to be throwing a daytime bbq at our house in my honor sometime in the near future as well.

Write me and let me know yr status.

Threateningly (but still tenderly),
Ryan

just another post in paradise

I'm thinking Phil Collins. I'm thinking Super Soakers and I'm thinking Mr. Pibb. VCRs and Vision Street Wear. I have been playing around on myspace. com today, searching Biola University and my old Highschool, trying to find old friends, old faces. Old Biola memories kept flashing back. Painting the exterior fence, sitting outside the eagle or whatever the food place was called. Common Grounds before the tranformation into a Denny's esque beauty. The new library that donated many books to the Half Way house. I often times wonder how exactly I ended up there. But don't we all. I'm looking forward to this weekend....

No worries, I found him.

I Really Want a Motorcycle

I do!

That's it, I just didn't want it to get lost in the shuffle.

quite thoughts with Bono

Though my impressions of U2 have been shaped by both the good... Alan Goss, who will defend every note and lyric with confidance and grace... and the not so good... james evens, who actually had a shrine in his room and I believe a worship service every friday afternoon dedicated to U2... I have found myself a bit of a cynic towards bono and company... Until I read this quite fasinating, witty and to the point interview on xianity today... (not one of my regular websites but nontheless can be interesting) heres the link... http://www.christianitytoday.com/music/interviews/2005/bono-0805.html

Sleeping bag?

Hey everyone. This is neither witty nor hilarious. I can't find my sleeping bag. I remember that I left it in someone's tent (Sycz?) at Jesse's bachelor party. It's a blue and black and yellow (beautiful for sure) north face sleeping bag. If anyone knows where it has gotten to, please let me know. I miss it.
Love
Ryan

this is a really cool posting, check it out.

Here i sit. I think my chair has memorized my ass. I awoke at 5:45 in the morning. Arrived at work quite early. At it's 9 pm now. Still at the office. There's really no point for me to be here. Nothing for me to do. But I still have to be here. There's not much juice left in the brain at this time. I'm missing a party at Monroe's Bar right now. That juice sounds good. I've read every new news article I can. I've changed every single address to our new one. Searched site after site for cheap furniture. Opened up a script I've started, only to close it back up again, many, many times. I'm trying to think of happy thoughts, things to take me away from here. But those only tend to frustrate. The true prison. I do have a Red Bull sitting on my desk, with a good shot of vodka hidden inside of it. I sold my motorcycle the other day. Brent's old bike. So guy named Mike bought it. He looked a little like Jesus. Long hair and all. I learned a lot from that bike...how to ride, how to work on bikes, and that my next bike will be a brand new one that doesn't need work and I can just ride it at leisure. I like to start new, fresh. Like having a clean slate with things.
Jesse and Robyn helped me move into the new place in Pasadena yesterday. It was the first time I had seen him since his wedding. Friends are good. Jesse and Robyn, I salute you for helping me.
I wish i had some witty thoughts or interesting ideas to talk about, but I don't. I don't have any interesting sites to post or funny pictures. No new movies to discuss or bands to speak of. I keep hearing my drunk(slightly) aunt from Texas, while at my other's Aunt's 3rd wedding a few weeks back...."alan, life is not a dress rehearsal. You're an actor type, you know what I mean. Life is not a dress rehearsal."
And I think I should leave it at that, what do you say...

Phone Jazzy Jazz

I left my phone at Goss' pad, so if you want to reach me in the next week or so, call Robyn or 805-658-2211... that number again 805-658-2211

Hooray for our two virgins!

Whoops. Anyway, here's the deal. After not clearing any of this with Alan or Andy, I've made some decisions for their collective bachelor weekend. Here are the details:
Location- Silver Strands Beach
Date- August 26-28
What's Happening?- We will be beach bar-b-cueing, surfing (especially those of us that can't surf) and sleeping at our dear friend Tim Curran's house.
Price of admission- Free bitches, just bring some meat, some beer and a sleeping bag.
Who's invited- Preferably people that know Alan and Andy. But if you don't and you'd still like to come... yeah, why not.
RSVP?- Toss a comment on here so I have an idea of how many people we've got going.
Do I have to come the whole time?- Yes you filthy whore, your wife will unchain you for one frickin' weekend.
Am I even invited to Andy's wedding?- I have no idea. Probably not though so you may want to come to voice this concern.

I think that's it.

Michael Chabon is auctioning off the opportunity to name a character in his next book. C'mon Jesse! ... Jarvis Pickle long lost to brother to Joseph Kavalier. Trace Chutkins the local shop-keeper. This could be great!

p.s. Lethem (Fuckwitch the grafitti artist from Brooklyn), Steven King (Southern Belle the ghostly taxi driver), John Grisham (Aragon the traveling minstrel/grumpy small-town judge) and others are also participating. Hop to it Gloyd!

Saturday, August 20th is not my birthday, but we gonna party anyways, cause Saturdays are more fun then Thursdays. So, you gonna come?

Saturday, August 20th,
7:00 pm: at the Simmons' in Long Beach,
3900 E 1st ST. apt #4.

I don't know what else to say...

I promise you everything you've every wished for if you come. so there...

okay, here's the situation

okay, i am putting some feelers out there...in trying to organize some sort of bachelor party esque type of event for myself and also for Andy Smith (if he is so inclinded)...I'm thinking the 27th of August, a Saturday I think. Nothing to fancy...no overnight deal...just some good hanging out. Place to be decided still. Is that a good day?

yesterday's adventure. followed by today's adventure.

yesterday's adventure-

floating the river turns out to be exactly what it sounds like. here's what you do:

drive your car about two or three miles north of town to barber park, where you'll pay $5 to park the car. rent two inflated inner tubes at $6 each and join a mass of mormon youth groupers at a sandy shoal where all sorts of inflated nautical verhicles are in various stages of deployment into the river. the water will be cold, but as the air temperature hovers somewhere around 102 degrees, cold water will feel just fine.

once in the water, position yourself on the tube so that you are with the direction of the current. then, relax and... float!

floating also turns out to be the optimal athletic activity, as it requires little to no physical involvement. in fact, up to a couple of years ago, floaters where allowed to bring alcoholic beverages along with them, presumably to meet their thirst needs on the long voyage. lord only knows why the city outlawed that practice. the most exertion you will, er, exert will be to avoid the mormon youth groupers bearing down on you in their enormous and poorly steered rafts and trying not to fall off your tube when going over what initially appear to be vicious but turn out to be docile rapids.

float on, float on. sing to yourself every song you can think of involving the words "float" and "merrily." (there will be two). see your friend floating a few yards behind you with a lazy smile on her contented face. feel the warm sun, watch sparrows flit and fish test the surface of the water.

you'll float for a total of two hours, down to ann morrison park, where you'll get out of the river and turn in your tubes. from there, a shuttle will take you back to your car ($2 each). on the shuttle, you and your friend will devise ways to make this activity cheaper and listen to an insane bus driver rant about the war in iraq. he will repeatedly refer to himself as a "radical," and in spite of his political leanings, manage to deliver you and your friend safely to your car. you'll drive home, have a glass of wine and delicious foods from india and watch a fantastic french heist film from the fifties, which will be named rififi.

today's adventure - housework.

note: a longer, better version of this tale can be found on the herewehaveidaho blog, along with some other news.

my baby goes vroom

We just bought a car for Karen.

Ukraine it is.

Dan, you're in my prayers. Not physically of course, but I am praying for you. Drew and I had a good chat on the phone. It's kind of weird. I've been up here for about a month, and it only now hit me how much everything is changing. I guess it hits you in different ways at different times. But I just got this hollow feeling in my gut, wondering if any of the next few years will be as meaningful as the past ones have been. I guess the feeling intensifies when I know people I care about are going through transition too. One day we'll all get together and it will be like one big Fleetwood Mac reunion tour (without the acid and the pot, but with the tambourines and the long flowing gowns). Anyway, I guess I was just thinking that 2-3 years ago I would have had no idea how often life asks you to sacrifice things at every step of the way. There's something pleasant about the sacrifices though, because when you decide to go a certain direction you know that it must be valuable in order for you to sacrifice things that are important (like pets or children).

let me tell you something

one of the major perks about our new place is that i now have a writing studio. the property manager put up a whole bunch of walls in the basement of our building in order to create storage units. i turned our unit into a studio. it has a window.

i'm usually in the studio for four hours every day. no shit. i read an hour of "how to write" books, an hour of short stories, an hour of critical theory, and then i write for an hour. the studio is perfect. it's deathly quiet, no one disturbs me, and i find the time just flies.

i've also written much more then i ever thought possible. something about locking yourself in a bare, silent room makes writing much easier. i haven't finished anything yet, but i also haven't had those "staring at the wall or spending hours on the internet (particularly blogs) when you know you should be writing" attacks.

yesterday we got the internet hooked up at the house and all of that motivation flew fast out of my tiny basement window. the short story reading hour went fine. for the "how to write" hour i decided to read blogs about books and ended up reading espn.com. the critical theory hour started out ok, but then i needed to look up some words on an online dictionary and decided to stop by the porch. where i remain.

at this writing, i'm supposed to be halfway through the writing hour. i have my document open, behind this window. damn this beautful invention called "internet." damn its inventor, al gore. damn them all.

The call

Isn't if funny when God smiles and says 'just kidding'... well these last couple of weeks have been a bit like that. I came out to Colorado for a little family vacation and things have gone from a bit wierd, to crazy, to my little world turned upsidedown.
WEEK !- alls good, just chillen with family, rafting with the guys, playing with the nieces and nephews, good times...
WEEKEND 1- this start to get a little wierd when we visit my Dad's friend who happends to pastor the biggest church in Colorado and talks to G.W.B. everyweek... he singles me out and says he wants to chat a bit... im taken back a bit but say sure, i'll hang out... we have a cool couple of hours on our own, chatting it up. at the end of the conversastion he says the he is going up to the mountains for a few days with some staff to chill/camp/ fast/ pray/ and other interesting God stuff that I am generally unfamiliar with. Sounds pretty cool so I say sure.
WEEK 2: I call Polly's to inform them about the extended trip... my boss is not happy because I have certain responsibilities beyond the typical barista and that I have been slacking, etc. etc. I say: chill out mike, it'll all be taken care of, He says: Fuck you dan your outa here... and that was that, in one fatal move, I lost my prized polly's position.
the week continues and I head up to camp, twas good, fun, good people. etc. etc. while im up there i meet a couple of guys who are pretty cool. one guy is coaching a high school soccer team, the other, has a big house.
I return to the city with my head spinning a bit. I lost my job, cool God time, what doors do I persue? where do I go from here? is God opening doors or am I just panicking?
WEEKEND 2: Doors open: coaching soccer, two jobs, and a pretty cool housing option. I wrestle... I love my southern california, I love my friends, I belong there; oportunities abound in colorado, growth opportunities, a new direction...
I wrestle...
I decide... Colorado... the new land of opportunity, day to day, persuing life's new direction...
and so my friends, this is where I am at... coffee shop, nick drake, sister's ibook, cigarettes, and the porch... declaring my love for all of you and sharing my heart...
I return on saterday, to finish the unfinished, and by the end of next week I'll be on my way back to Colorado. Saterday night, Darrens party. the rest of the week, visiting, packing, and mourning California.
and so thats that, love you all...

For the love of wireless...

I'm sitting in the LBC airport preparing to board a flight to Vermont for the wedding of a friend. How incredible it is to sit here and type an email to you all from a rather uncomfortable, yet surprisingly relaxing, airport chair. The irony is, I'm listening to live Coltrane on iTunes radio and as I hear the audience clap I whip my head in circles around me to see the roaring applause. Technology has made me a damn fool. A damn fool I've been made. My love to you all, especially my new brother of Idaho living. See you in Nampa sometime.

bday

I'm having a birthday party at my apartment on saturday. it will start at 7pm. there will be fried chicken, egg nog, pizza, beer, christmas music, and good times.

to austin...

hey everybody... for those of you planning on traveling to texas for our wedding october 1st, just wanted to post that southwest has off and on deals and internet specials. as always, it is cheaper to fly out of austin on a monday morning as opposed to a sunday, but i recommend checking frequently with them because their deals can change one day to the next. just a little fyi--
hope everyone is good. i haven't seen anyone for a while. since we've starting shooting the tv show, the days are long. almost too long. xio and i will be moving to pasadena. i will actually be up there come mid august. looks like we'll be neighbors matt. until then....

hurray

i have the internet again!
